COMMENTS
Absu is an extreme metal band from Dallas, Texas. Their demos and first album leaned towards death metal, but evolved more towards a black metal and thrash metal which includes elements of Celtic and folk music (and later, elements of jazz fusion, progressive rock and psychedelic music) which the band calls 'Mythological Occult Metal'. Their lyrical themes are esoteric, including themes of Celtic, Sumerian and Mesopotamian myths and legends, alchemy, numerology, magick, and sorcery.
The band originally formed as Dolmen in 1989, and after briefly taking the name Azathoth, they became Absu in 1991.
Joey Jordison (Slipknot) is a big fan of Absu, and he coined the term 'Absu' to describe the black make-up that members of Slipknot wear under their masks to darken around the eyes and mouth.
Author's note: Most people regard the 2001 album, 'Tara', as the absolute peak of the band's career. Proscriptor McGovern's drum work is the masterpiece of this release, displaying an inhuman speed and technicality that surely set a new benchmark in extreme metal drumming.
